Understand the basics of debating, listen to the arguments and vocabulary in an episode of The Great Debate, and record a Flipgrid on the theme "Should we abolish animal testing for medical research?"

Basic activity: warm-up statements

Time for the activity: ~10 minutes

  1. You are going to answer a series of statements.

  2. Each statement begins with Should ... ? and you will be asked to either agree or disagree with them as well as discuss your opinion with a classmate.

  3. Use your whiteboards and start your opion with Yes, I agree ... or No, I disagree ... .

  • Teachers be required to attend university to remember what it is like being a student?

  • We legalise cannabis and marijuana?

  • Car drivers have their driver’s licence reevaluated every 10 years?

  • We abolish animal testing for medical research?

In pairs or small groups, discuss your opinions on The Great Debate Rhetoric 101 and prepare to record yourself using Flipgrid.


Time for the activity: 30 minutes


  1. Discuss with your classmates

    • What do you think, should we abolish animal testing for medical research?

    • What difference does it make that one of the speakers stops and does retakes?

    • What strategies do you have for coping with nervousness?

    • In your opinion, who won the debate?

  2. Fill the SEAL-method template:

    • Statement: Yes, I agree that... or no, I disagree that ...

    • Example: For example ...

    • Analyse: Tell us more about example by using at least one word from the vocabulary list.

    • Link: Therefore, I believe that we should ...

  3. Record yourselves using Flipgrid. Everyone has to speak.
