Argumentative linking words
Linking words are useful when writing an argumentative essay. The argumentative essay follows a set pattern:
Grab the reader’s attention. Explain why the issue is important, your position and state what your essay will be about in your introduction.
The body includes arguments and evidence that supports your argument. Also present counter-arguments and why the opposing viewpoint is flawed or incomplete
Summarise the main arguments and main points. End with a thought-provoking statement, a suggestion for future action or consideration.
When introducing the reader to what your essay will be about, use words such as:
To begin with, First or Initially
When presenting your arguments, use words such as: On the one hand, Additionally or Furthermore
When presenting counter-arguments, use words such as: On the other hand, However or In contrast
When coming to a conclusion, use words such as: Therefore, In conclusion or To summarise
