🕒 ~20 minutes ✍️In Pairs of Groups 🎯 Grammar Skills
🕒 ~30 minutes ✍️Watch together 🎯 Receptive Skills
We are going to watch Shrek (2001) until the 28 minute mark.
Before watching, the context is important to understand the tropes the movie builds upon:
Shrek (2001) is not just a children's movie; it is a direct parody of traditional Disney fairy tales
It features a parody and reversal of a "majestic kingdom"
The movie inverts many classic character ideas, such as how Shrek (the hero) is a grumpy and sacrastic ogre, or how Fiona turns out to be a martial arts expert.
Keep these in mind as we watch the movie.
🕒 ~30-40 minutes ✍️Analyse two scenes with TTMER 🎯 Speaking Skills
In pairs or small groups, summarise Shrek and agree on two scenes you want to analyse.
Individually, take notes on the two scenes using TTMER:
What is the target? Who or what is being criticised?
What satirical techniques are used?
What message or opinion is the creator communicating or hiding behind the humour?
Is the criticism effective? Why or why not?
How might different audiences react?
Share your analysis with your classmate(s) and write a brief, analytical paragraph evaluating the satirical elements of the movie.
